In light of the horrific war in Ukraine and other Humanitarian crises around the world, PPSC (Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Study Center) mobilized to form the PPSC Refugee Support Project. PPSC RSP is a group of volunteers throughout the mental health and lay community who provide crisis and support services to refugees, their families, service workers.

Volunteers at PPSC’s Refugee Support Project fall into several categories, including but not limited to:

Licensed Clinicians/Therapists:

Clinicians will donate 1+ hours of pro bono support to referrals made to the PPSC program, other individuals or organizations with whom the PPSC RSP partners or affiliates, or referrals made within the PPSC RSP volunteer group. Each clinician will hold a license, or, if they hold a limited permit or are pre-licensed, work under the humanitarian-based supervision of their own designated supervisor. All clinicians will abide by HIPAA guidelines as required. Each clinician providing counseling will provide services only within their scope of practice. Voluntary trainings and support groups will be provided to members of the PPSC RSP group on an ongoing basis.

Asylum Advocates:

Advocates will donate 1+ hours of pro bono support to referrals made to the PPSC program, other individuals or organizations with whom the PPSC RSP partners or affiliates, or referrals made within the PPSC RSP volunteer group. All advocates will be referred for asylum-specific training through the Weill Cornell Center for Human Rights. Upon completion of the training and receipt of WCCHR affidavit of eligibility, advocates will be linked to referrals and an immigration attorney either through WCCHR or PPSC to assist refugees with their asylum application process. Asylum advocates must also be licensed clinicians, but do not have to be licensed in psychotherapy (i.e. they can be physicians, occupational therapists, etc.)

Translators:

Resettlement Volunteers:

Translators will donate 1+ hours of pro bono support to PPSC RSP’s clinicians and asylum advocates who are not bilingual. Translators will have access to PPSC’s trainings and support groups as well and be required to follow all the HIPAA guidelines as our clinicians.

PROFESSIONAL Translators who speak English, Ukrainian, Russian, Spanish (and even other languages!) WILL PROVIDE REFERRALS WITH TRANSLATION OF LEGAL DOCUMENTATION (EX: SOCIAL SECURITY PAPERWORK, MEDICAID PAPERWORK, WORK PERMIT PAPERWORK, ETC).

VOLUNTEERS WILL ALSO WORK TO SUPPORT REFERRALS WITH CARE COORDINATION & SECURING BASIC NEEDS (EX: HOUSING, EMPLOYMENT, ETC).

Administrative Volunteers:

Administrative volunteers may be licensed or unlicensed. They will assist the Coordinator and other Administrators with various tasks of communication, liaising with other individuals and organizations, collating volunteer data, research and more.

It is our intention to expand this project to other refugee groups once we have consolidated our efforts.

*Volunteer clinicians may or may not be members of the PPSC community, (i.e candidates in training, faculty or supervisors), but are independent practitioners who have agreed to affiliate and participate in the PPSC RSP effort. PPSC requires participating volunteers to have the appropriate license, insurance and humanitarian-based supervision as needed and abide by any required RSP protocols.
